Tickets? Check. Bags packed? Check. Travel insurance? No problem, it’s covered by my credit card. But is it? Seeing the world beyond your doorstep costs money, so you may be tempted to rely on your credit card coverage as your travel insurance. The insurance may be “free,” but will it have the coverage you need?

With Manulife Financial Travel Insurance, there are a lot of inexpensive travel insurance options. And there’s a lot more flexibility than with your average “free” credit card travel insurance product. Ask yourself the following questions to help you get “home free” if a medical emergency strikes while you are out of town.

How long are you covered for?
Travel insurance cannot be purchased once you depart from your home province. It is important to check the length of stay covered by credit card coverage, as well as any restrictions based on age. Manulife Financial Travel Insurance can be used instead of or to top up¹ credit card protection.

Are you covered for emergency medical care after you arrive at your destination?
You need to be certain that not only you have emergency medical protection when travelling to and from the airport, while travelling on the plane or in the taxi, but also protection if you suffer an accident or become ill after arriving at the destination. Expenses may not be covered. And if there is one reason to buy travel insurance, this is it. For a simple trip across the border, hospital costs can approach thousands of dollars a day. If you are in doubt, taking the time to check and know how much coverage you have before leaving is better than being under or uninsured when an emergency happens.

Are there any restrictions or exclusions based on your age and health?
Manulife Financial Travel Insurance offers the option of a medical questionnaire for individuals 61 years of age or older with a chronic illness. This is not always available with credit card coverage.

In case of a medical emergency, will you have to guarantee and pay on site the fees charged by the health care provider?
To the extent possible, Manulife Financial Travel Insurance’s Assistance Centre will arrange a direct payment for you. And Manulife coordinate the claim with your Canadian provincial or territorial government health insurance plan.

What if you can’t go on your trip for some unforeseen reason? Does it include cancellation insurance before departure as well as interruption insurance during the trip?
When booking your tickets, you may need to purchase additional protection, depending on the cost of the trip. You should check your credit card to see if it includes Trip Interruption or Cancellation coverage and, if so, whether the maximums are sufficient to protect your investment. If you have to return home because of a sick relative or death in the family, interruption insurance can help pay for some of the costs and help you resume youir journey.

Are your “adventure” activities covered?
You should verify whether your credit card travel insurance includes options for things like winter sports.

Does the insurance coverage include baggage loss, theft, or damage?
Check whether the credit card travel insurance includes benefits like replacing sporting equipment or laptops. Many clients may be concerned about baggage coverage.it’s important, but emergency medical is the most important component, because things can be replaced, while health can’t.

Are the people travelling with you also insured?
Some credit card travel insurance does not cover large families. Depending on your choice of coverage, Manulife Financial Travel Insurance offers family premiums.

Can you receive assistance wherever you are in the world, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?
Check whether the credit card travel insurance offers a “free call” number in multiple countries should a claim become necessary. With Manulife Financial Travel Insurance, toll-free travel assistance is always available, and you can speak with someone in the language of your choice.

Basic credit card travel coverage is…basic.however. Before you take your next trip, make an appointment to read through the information that comes with their credit card to make certain you know what you are covered for and when you are covered. And we offer Manulife Financial Travel Insurance to best meet your needs. For online quotes and to buy coverage, please visit https://hermes.manulife.com/can/affinity/travel/travel.nsf/public/wlhome?Open&as=wlajay¹

It is the client’s responsibility to verify that the credit card coverage permits a top-up with another insurer without affecting the base coverage.

Everyone loves getting the best price on their hotel, car rental and airfare when they take a trip. But what about travel insurance? Here are seven easy ways we can help our clients save money on Manulife Travel Insurance when they are preparing for a trip – you’ll love having more left in your pocket to enjoy at your destination!

Save 50% with Travel Canada Savings
Heading to St. John’s or Saskatoon? Any Single-Trip Emergency Medical plan is half the standard out-of-country rate when all the travel is within Canada.

Save 5% with Travel Companion Savings for Any Emergency Medical Plan
Now that’s a good reason not to travel alone.

Family Coverage for Any Emergency Medical Plan
No matter how many dependent kids under the age of 21 (26 if they are full-time students) are travelling with our client, the premium cost for the entire family will equal just twice the premium of the oldest traveller under the age of 55. Isn’t it better to spend those dollars saved on building cherished family memories?

Savings Combinations, Too!
If our client is going on a great Canadian adventure with a friend, combine the Travel Companion Savings with the Travel Canada rates for even bigger savings. You can combine Family Coverage savings with Travel Canada savings, too!

Deductible Savings Options
As with car insurance, you can increase the deductible on single-trip and multi-trip emergency medical coverage for trips outside of Canada – the higher the deductible, the greater the savings. All Manulife Out-of-Province Travel Insurance plans include a $0 deductible – with all eligible expenses paid from dollar one. Can our client afford to pay $500 out of pocket? It would save them 15%. A $1,000 deductible? That’s a 20% savings.

Travel Often?
Offering economical Multi-Trip Coverage can save our client time and money, plus provide the convenience, value and flexibility that comes with knowing any trip they plan over the year is already taken care of. And a Multi-Trip Plan allows unlimited travel within Canada to other provinces or territories!

And don’t forget Top-Up!
Our client may already have coverage under their group insurance plan or their credit card. Find out how long they are covered, and use the Top-Up option to extend coverage for as long as they need it – with no money wasted on ‘double coverage.’¹

¹ It is the client’s responsibility to confirm that a Top-Up is permitted on the existing plan with no loss of coverage.

Conditions, Exclusions and Limitations may apply.
